Strapping with wire: Galvanized steel Wire's strength, weather resistance and comparatively low cost are the characteristics that make wire the right choice for the following applications:
 

• Where bale growth is extreme
• For large 1000kg Big Bales
• When stacks are consolidated

• When wet pulp is handled with clamp trucks
• When pulp is stored outdoors
• When Unitizing for top attachment handling

Common System Components. Cranston's 900 Series Knotter Heads create strong, durable, double twisted wire knots without excessive wire fatigue or overlap. When using Cranston specified wire, the 900's twist count and pitch optimized your wire yield. Machine systems for pulp use 140mm / 5.5" knotters (hydraulic or pneumatic) and Systems for Units and Stacks use 178mm / 7" models (hydraulic). Request Wire specification: CS003.

Cranston's 4 wheel drive, wire drive units are available in Hydraulic or Electric versions and provide consistently superior wire control (feed and tensioning).

Cranston's wire tracks are machined from special wear resistant materials resulting in small or large opening tracks that provide years of use with minimal maintenance.

Machine controls, each wire strapping machine system is standard with a machine mounted plc and operator touch screen (pushbuttons are optional). Intuitive screens allow operators and maintenance staff to access auto and manual modes as well as level 1 diagnostics.

Universal Conveyor This device is the common receiving element for the interchangeable machine elements that make up Cranston's Flexible Packaging Concept; 987EP, 987, 986 (wire strappers), RapStrap (paper strapper) or RapPress (wrapper gluing) machine systems.

The base plate is equipped with caster guides and the 4 row chain conveyor tops hinge open to reveal a large opening making machine interchange quick and easy. Umbilical’s from the mating portable machines are connected to the conveyors receptacles. An electric drive is standard and a host of options such as speed, height, length, powered lift, auto reversing flow are available.

987EP Designed specifically to apply today's smaller more cost effective wire diameters to fixed or variable sized bales. Wire knot is located under bottom of bale. Machine is available with a host of options and is standard with an electric wire drive, pneumatic knotter and low voltage sensors and solenoids. Machine rolls into Cranston's universal conveyor.

987 and 986 Designed specifically to apply small to large diameter wires to fixed or variable sized bales. Wire knot is located under bottom of bale. Both machines are designed for Cranston's recommended temperature tolerant hydraulic oil and are available with a host of options such as auto reversing bale flow and integrated or remote controls. Machines roll into Cranston's universal conveyor. Machine power is hydraulic. The 987 model utilizes hydraulic power from a remote source while the 986 has its hydraulic source integrated on the machine.

986BB (Big Bale). Designed to apply large diameter wire to stacks of bales (traditionally non-wrapped 1000k bales). Wire knot is located under bottom of stack optimizing knot strength. 986BB strappers are available in two configurations.

  • Portable (pictured). Similar to 986 with tall opening track, and integrated hydraulic power unit.



  • Fixed (not shown). Similar to Unitizer with single stack conveyor. Compactors are optional on this version.

986SK (side knot). Designed specifically for wet pulp. Applies medium diameter wires to variable sized bales. Wire knot is located on side of bale reducing product contamination in the knotter. Machine is available with several specific options. 986SK strappers have integrated hydraulic power units and use Cranston's recommended temperature tolerant hydraulic oil.

Strapper Press Cranston's Strapper Press is designed specifically for wet pulp producers that wrap their pulp. This station compresses the pulp bale during wire application, ensuring the wires remain tight as the bale dries. A Strapper Press system includes the press and its conveyor and is designed to interface with a 987EP, 987 or 986 wire strapper. For wet pulp producers not wrapping, modifications in interface with a 986SK strapper can be quoted.

967 Unitizer Compresses package and applies large diameter wires around single or double stacks. Developed for pre-slinging double stacks of wood pulp bales for top attachment lifting, Cranston Unitizer’s are also used to enhance integrity of single or double stacks (dry or wet pulp) for warehouse and domestic shipping and storage applications.

Cranston Unitizers are found in Pulp Mills and in Stevedore Warehouses, depending on regional practices and are optimized for the specific site conditions. Typical pulp mill applications are permanent and include a high level of system integration. Warehouse Unitizer's can be mounted permanently or can be equipped with self contained portability kits.

Unitizers include an integral conveyor (6 row hinged chain with powered lift), side and top compactors (supported at both ends) and wire strapping system (with Quick Disconnect 178mm/7" knotter for large diameter wire). Wire knots are located under bottom of package for optimizing knot strength. A hydraulic power unit and EZ thread wire cage are required. Machines is available with a wide range of options such as: Safety Factor Printer, Wire & wire knot tensile tester, corner clip dispensers, Alignment paddles, PLC and Motor controls.

EZ Thread Coil Cage In 2007, Cranston upgraded its earlier wire coil cart designs to an enclosed, flexible application, coil cage assembly. This new product has been reviewed against stringent safety standards and has truly "Tamed the Wire Beast" while improving machine loading. Wire threading is now as quick and easy as poking the wire end into the feed die until it arrives at the machine - "virtually resistance free". A set of wire straightening wheels are built into the top of the cart and open/close with a simple movement of the handle. This system includes a telescoping cross tube and top payoff ring (fits most common production stands) and is now standard on all machine systems. To address current safety considerations, Cranston has created a field upgrade kit for most of the earlier coil cart designs.

The portable cage configuration (left) is recommended when the entire system must be removable. Either one of the two fixed cage configurations promote quicker strapper interchange and the choice of cart or no-cart optimizes flexibility. Cranston offers wire coil stands for customers receiving wire without stands.

Cranston began its work on this revolutionary concept in 1998. The goal was an alternative form of bale retention using repulpable materials and a more operator friendly machine system. Many tests were made using tapes, twisted paper cords and bands constructed of paper. The resulting RapStrap system has been a success from its first day on the job when, in year 2000, it went into full and continuous production.

• RapStrap
paper strapping is an Eco-Friendly repulpable strapping made of multiple twisted paper cords (renewable and sustainable) assembled into a ribbon using a cold water repulpable adhesive which is compatible with most typical pulping processes. RapStrap is manufactured in compliance with CS004 specifications as well as FDA 21CFR175.105 regulations and is bagged and sealed in Jumbo Coils containing 4876 Meters (16,000ft) of strapping.

The use of twisted strands of paper provide a natural elongation, durability, and flexibility needed for bending around sharp corners and absorbing shock. RapStrap’s smooth rounded edges promote a gentle friendliness to both the product and the fingers that handle it.

At the end of its life, RapStrap again demonstrates its superiority, as the spiraling paper strands offer excellent exposure and contact of the fiber to the pulper’s water and agitation.

• Patented "Thru Strap" Sealing technology was designed specifically for RapStrap paper strapping. The joint is created by driving heat thru the strapping material from the outside surfaces, which fully involves the adhesive and the individual strands, creating a more complete and durable seal. This patented seal technology is the only available that operates at approximately 176C (350 F), well below the 260C (500f) flashpoint of the strapping. Other systems that operate well above this flashpoint present unnecessary risk of fire.

• Efficiency "Jumbo Coils" of RapStrap are also a Cranston exclusive, made possible by unique machine features that accept splices through the system. When compared to other systems, these "Jumbo coils" reduce operator labor and packaging waste by a ratio of 4:1.

• Flexible Packaging RapStrap is one of three retention choices that quickly and easily interchange in the Cranston Universal conveyor (or equal). The machine system includes large casters and the RapStrap is mounted on the machine for the quickest and easiest operator interface. Little change to an existing packaging line is needed when upgrading to a RapStrap system. A typical system includes 2-3 portable RapStrap machines and a floor dolly which provides the operator pallet-to-machine loading of Jumbo RapStrap Coils

RapStrap Machine. Designed to apply single or multiple straps to dry sheeted pulp bales. The strap ends are automatically joined and sealed beneath the bale. This portable machine has a welded steel frame, is much lighter than a conventional wire strapper and has an integrated QD coil chuck for Jumbo coils, making it self contained, fast to load and easier to interchange.

The fixed frame version of the RapStrap machine inserts into Cranston's universal strapper conveyor (or equal). The hinge frame version interfaces with conveyors that host wire strapper’s without wheels.

A friendly screen display and integrated PLC controls provide a host of features such as level 1 diagnostics, Power Assist Quick feed and Strap Clearing. When the RapStrap machine is used to control the strapper conveyor, features are expanded to include Selectable Strap Patterns (0-3), Offset Strapping and Stack Patterns (creates a unique strap pattern on the bottom bale of each stack), Siemens or Allen Bradley controls are available.

Handi-Bander. Handi-bander. Handheld tool designed to seal RapStrap paper strapping. Operator aligns the strapping in the seal press and then rotates the seal handle to make the joint. Hand tool reaches initial operating temperature in approximately 1 minute. An optional bolt-on strap tension module is available. Tool requires typical 120v power and the power cord includes GFI protection. Heaters are not sealed against water egress – tool is not intended for use in wet environments.

With ambitions of reaching wire free bale retention, using repulpable materials, Cranston provided the industries first wrapper gluing system in 1968. This first installation processed dry sheeted pulp for domestic customers and provided over a decade of reliable operation. Although today's system utilizes more efficient materials, components and includes a higher performance adhesive (RapBond), the underlying concept of using a water soluble adhesive to secure a 2 piece wrapper continues to produce great cost benefits for those with agreeable applications.

RapBond is a water based glue that disperses in most typical unheated pulping processes. More on RapBond.

The combination of Cranston's RapBond adhesive and a sturdy wrapper, provide an extremely cost effective and durable package. In addition, wrapper fold appearance is enhanced as a result of the RapPress's pressing action over the folded wrapper. RapBond is available in tinted or non-tinted and is sprayed upon the wrapper at the wrapper dispenser and wrapper folding stations. A typical system consists of (2) portable RapPress units, a bulk adhesive distribution station, (4) QD spray valve assemblies with adjustable brackets, (4) spray valve support modules, and a remote purge manifold for cleaning of the nozzles. With Cranston's assistance, Users provide field plumbing or piping.


• Efficiency For estimating consumption, Cranston uses 18 grams of RapBond per bale which yields approximately 11,000 bales per barrel. Assuming 180 bales per hour, (1100mtpd) a single barrel will last approximately 60 hours of continuous production.


• Flexible Packaging RapPress is one of three retention choices that quickly and easily interchange in the Cranston Universal conveyor (or equal). Because the QD spray valves are integrated into the fixed machinery, they can be started prior to a portable machine change from strap to glue. This overlapping provides convenience and reduces stress for the operations staff. Little change to an existing packaging line is needed when upgrading to a RapPress system.

RapPress. Includes a welded steel frame mounted on casters, pneumatic management system (customer to provide pneumatic supply with shut off), and a machine-mounted plc control panel with operator touch screen. Intuitive screen displays feature auto and manual control, plus level 1 diagnostics. RapPress units roll into Cranston's universal strapper conveyor (or existing if equal).

Bulk adhesive distribution station. A wall mount or floor stand is provided to support the pump assembly above the top of the RapBond supply drum. All internal plumbing and valves are included. Cranston reviews the required water, glue and air supply strategies with the customer, prior to installation.

Nozzle control plate. Each plate includes a terminal box with pushbutton, for manual spray cycles, and two regulators for controlling the glue and air pressure.

QD spray valve assemblies with adjustable brackets. Cranston reviews the recommended locations with the customer prior to installation on the existing wrapping and folding equipment. Nozzles are mounted on easily adjustable brackets and are equipped with quick discount hoses for the incoming glue and air

Remote Purge Manifold. Mounts over a utility sink for convenient nozzle maintenance.

Eco Friendly - Operator Friendly - Cold water repulpable adhesive is sprayed onto the bales wrapper and is compatible with most typical pulping processes.

RapBond is available in White or tinted in Blue or Green. RapBond is manufactured in compliance to Cranston's CS008 specifications as well as FDA 21CFR175.105 regulations and is sealed and shipped in 205kg (450#) fiber barrels (4 to a pallet). Larger totes can be quoted. Freezing must be avoided.

Working together, the RapPress machine system, RapBond adhesive and a well presented, quality wrapper create a surprisingly durable package for many types of sheeted dry pulp. The result is a well wrapped, easily re-pulped bale with a uniquely smooth clean appearance.

Using Cranston's typical coverage estimate of approximately 11,000 bales per barrel, RapBond is the most cost effective form of bale wrap and retention in use today. For those that have favorable applications, using RapBond can create savings in two ways:

       1) Reduction in operation labor - at 200bph: (1) barrel = (55) hours

       2) Material cost - cost/bale can be 1/4 of wire and 1/8 of paper strap.

Strength - Water resistant - Recyclability - accompanied by wire's round cross section and uniform flexibility has made it the traditional media for wood pulp retention for several decades.

All Cranston wire is manufactured in compliance to Cranston's CS003 wire specifications and in addition, its Unitizing grade wire is recommended for top attachment lifting per specification CS001. Target coil weight is 815kg (1800#) and Cranston offers the choice of shipment with or without the use of typical returnable wire stands.

Although a wide range of diameters and tensile strengths are available for virtually all applications, Cranston recommends the following standards for use with wood pulp:

Sheeted dry bales: 1.8mm (15awg) diameter with a tensile range of 880 - 1127 N/mm2 (130- 160000 psi).

Large wet pulp bales: 2.2mm (13.5awg) diameter with a tensile range of 880 - 1127 N/mm2 (130- 160000 psi).

Stacks and Units: 3mm (11awg) diameter with a tensile range of 1000 - 1175 N/mm2 (145- 170,000 psi).

Instead of fighting performance variations due to fluid temperature changes, replace your standard oil with Cranston's recommended temperature tolerant oil.
